PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY
Martial arts training is the foundation of the program. Students are expected to participate, learn, exercise, and contribute to arespectful training environment. The goal is to develop practical self-defense skills while strengthening confidence, discipline, focus, fitness, courtesy, and personal responsibility.
Austin Kenpo Karate has served Austin-area families for decades. The program is built around practical self-defense, fitness, discipline, confidence, respect and personal responsibility. The goal is not simply to occupy the hours after school, but to give children a structured environment where they can learn, exercise and develop habits that carry into school, family life and adulthood.
Sifu Jeff Schrider began martial-arts training as a child and has trained in multiple systems. His background includes Chinese Kenpo Karate, Lung Chi Quan Kung Fu, American Kenpo Karate, and continued study in Judo and Jiu-Jitsu.He took over Austin Kenpo Karate in 1996 and has spent decades teaching children and adults. Many advanced students began in the children's program and trained with him for years. His teaching emphasizes practical technique, discipline, respect, confidence and personal growth.
The COVID-19 pandemic and the continuing rise in commercial rental and operating costs ultimately made a traditional commercial facility impractical. Austin Kenpo Karate now operates from a privately owned residential property at 10613 Turner Drive that is used as a dedicated training and business location; there are no residential tenants living at the property. This is a temporary location while youth enrollment is rebuilt to a level that can support reopening a dedicated brick-and-mortar martial arts facility.
Austin Kenpo Karate is not currently operating as a state-licensed childcare facility. We continue to use strong child-safety practices developed during our years of licensed operation and intend to reapply for the appropriate license when the program returns to a qualifying permanent commercial facility.
